Product Description

Product Description

When the 20-year-old Barbra Streisand first sang the role of comedienne and torch singer Fanny Brice in Funny Girl in 1964, composer Jule Styne already had a track record of writing hit shows for many of Broadway's leading ladies including Carol Channing, Ethel Merman and Judy Holliday. Once again Styne was equal to the challenge, and came up with a score second only to Gypsy in his output. On this recording (which differs considerably from the film soundtrack), there's a very amusing portrait of Momma Brice from Kay Medford, lugubrious and deprecatory by turns, who partners Danny Meehan, Fanny's song and dance coach, in a wry duet, "Who Taught Her Everything She Knows". For the rest it's Streisand all the way, proclaiming "I'm the Greatest Star", tearing up her local music hall joint with "Cornet Man", pouring her heart out in "People" and going full-throttle in the self-affirming "Don't Rain On My Parade". Near the show's end, two numbers--"Who Are You Now", a wistful look back to her marriage, and the climactic "Music That Makes Me Dance"--cap a great score for Streisand. Milton Rosenstock, Styne's conductor on Gypsy, is the guarantor of this exciting, brilliantly recorded album. --Adrian Edwards

Excellent...truly a great star with splendiferous talents, singing a whole marvellistic range of unique songs...which show every inch of Barb's talents, which shockingly range from her almost "whispering hush" to her full, diaphram pounding...earth shattering HOLLER! in "dont rain on my parade" which for me was the true classic in this CD...as its one of those tracks that absolutley fills you to the brim with energy, which starts to spill out of you, and you want to run from Glasgow to Cornwall, as fast as you can finally taking off into the sky yelling..."Hey nicky Arnsteen...HERE I AM!" the whole Cd is an absolutley wonderful piece of art! it tires me out everytime i listen to it...the variety knocks one out! a truly memorable classic, which i feel honoured to have owned! ;-)
